Popular screen resolution

See the chart below for the popular display resolution people are using. Note that around 1/5 of internet population are still using 800x600 and more and more people are using 1024x768. However, webmaster should understand his/her target audiences to decide a right resolution to use for the his/her website.

For example, if your audiences are people with low technical background in developing countries, you might want to target for 800x600. However, if your target is the design guru or technology pioneer, you should adjust your site for a higher resolution. Use the web statistics available for your site to know your audiences.

I have obtained the information from the following site: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

Hi June,

first of all, nice blog.

I am not sure if really so much people are using a resolution of 800x600.
Please take a look at this:

Hi Pascal,

Thanks for your comment. I looked at the link you have provided and yes, the population who is using 800x600 is very minimal. Anyhow, I am wondering if the stat on your website represents the European and especially Dutch population? Since European tends to be technologically advance, maybe that's why they have a higher population using the high resolution screen. I think my statistic is an average of the global result, which might include some developing countries and maybe that's why it has more low resolution users.

However, when you check the source of my statistics: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp, you can see there is a downward trend of people using 800x600. That means globally more and more people are using high resolution screen now.

I guess webmaster should look at the characteristic of their site's target population. e.g. Look at the audience's country statistic. Even in a developing country, if your target audience is the high tech group in that country, the majority of the site user will still be using the high resolution. Therefore it is very important to know your audience in order for you to target your website content and to optimize the site resolution for your audience group.

Thanks,

June

yes, any tools that help you to find out more about your visitors (how they find you, the keywords they use etc) would be very beneficial in planning and improving any e-marketing campaign.. same as in traditional marketing method, you need to know your target audience in order for you to create an effective e-marketing campaign

btw. i checked our visitors.

15.03.07 - 14.04.07

1024 x 768 = 44,51%
1280 x 1024 = 33,19%
1280 x 800 = 3,48%
1152 x 864 = 3,39%
800 x 600 = 2,44 %

the rest are higher resolutions.

Won't you wonder if somebody says he doesn't know what is a software company ? Am sure you will fall off from your chair. But believe me it is true. There still are people in third world countries who don’t know anything about software development, web application development or internet. So those who are not really aware about these buzzing things, try to find out what is a tech-world of Internet.
